Alleged rapist of 12-year-old caught in Maryland

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - October 27, 2010

Now, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is seeking to have him extradited back to Norristown.

23-year-old Daniel Gregor, the former fugitive, was being sought by Montgomery County authorities for the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl.

Authorities say the incident happened earlier this week in Trappe Borough where Gregor was said to be visiting his girlfriend.

State police went looking for him at his home in the 400 block of North Franklin Street, but found the house empty.

Meanwhile, his neighbors were wondering why police were looking for him and were stunned when they found out:

"It's very shocking. I didn't know he was capable of doing something like that," neighbor Michael Weller said.

"He was always right there to help us carry stuff in or help us unload things, he was always right there, he was a real helpful guy...I'm devastated," neighbor Pat Weller said.

Pennsylvania State Police got a tip that Gregor was hiding out at his father's home in Elkton, Maryland. After staking out the home and confirming that he was there, heavily-armed Maryland state police raided the home around 5:00 a.m. Wednesday.

He was taken into custody without incident.

In addition to the alleged rape of the 12-year-old, he is being investigated in other sexual encounters with minors.

Gregor has a long history with the law since he was a minor himself. He's previously been arrested for drugs, criminal trespass, retail theft, reckless driving, DUI, purchasing alcohol as a minor, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of children.

But none of this was known by his neighbors:

"I've always seen him out on the porch and what not talking to kids, but I always thought he was a friendly dude," neighbor Charles Heimbach said.

None of them are as stunned as his next door neighbors who say the 23-year-old man was always playing with their young children.

"He was always talking to the kids and playing with them and we never let him get too close," next door neighbor Delilah Gonzales said.

Gregor is awaiting an extradition hearing before a magistrate in Cecil County which could come as early as Thursday. At least for now, he is only being charged with rape and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a minor, but other charges are expected to be added later on, once the sheriff's office gets him back here to Pennsylvania.
