UK figures show fall in terrorism arrests

LONDON - October 28, 2010

Figures released Thursday showed that in the last 12 months a total of 101,248 people were stopped and searched, but only one in 200 were arrested - all for non-terrorism offenses.

Home Secretary Theresa May has pledged to overhaul the powers under a wider review of the country's anti-terrorism legislation.

The ministry said there were a total of 173 arrests on terrorism offenses in the last year, down from 190 over the previous 12 months.

A total of 1,834 people have been arrested in Britain on allegations of terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
