Investigators say a child playing with a lighter sparked a fire in South Philadelphia that left an elderly man dead.

The fire happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1900 block of Latona Street.

When rescuers arrived, firefighters say they found flames shooting from the first floor.

Officials say one person was not able to make it out of the house. He has been identified as 77-year-old James Williams.

A police officer was injured while trying to get into the house to save the person inside, suffering minor injuries from glass cut wounds to the legs.
