Firefighter injured responding to Roxborough inferno

ROXBOROUGH - November 20, 2010

A ladder truck struck the firefighter shortly after 5:25 a.m. after arriving to a fire ravaging the Abbey House Apartments , along the 400 block of Domino Lane in Roxborough.

The 45-year-old firefighter has been rushed to Einstein Medical Center. Investigators say he is being treated for serious head and internal injuries. Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says the firefighter is "critical, but stable.":

Firefighters arriving on the scene encountered flames shooting ftrom the second and third floors.

Firefighters used ladders to pull several residents from the burning building.

About 100 residents have been displaced.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation.

Many residents have lost a lot of personal belongings, if not all of them.

Addition fire crews were called in to help firefighters struggling to get an upper hand on the blaze.

Investigators have not said what sparked the fire.
