Now that's one smart car

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - November 22, 2010

Researchers at the University of Iowa are developing technology that can detect when a driver is drunk, drowsy or even has early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

Timothy Brown tells the Des Moines Register the monitoring devices could tell a driver to pull over, call police or even kill the engine.

He says the technology works by looking for the same things that might attract an officer's attention, like variations in speed, weaving in and out of lane or steering over-corrections.
