Deer knocks down girl during N.J. race

Upper Saddle River police say a 7-year-old girl escaped injury Thursday morning when a deer ran out on to the course and knocked her down during the Dick Meighan Memorial 5K Run. The annual event in the Bergen County community raises money for several local nonprofit groups and scholarships for area students.

Barry Ervin, one of the event's organizer, said the deer apparently became confused and excited when it saw the dozens of runners going by. The animal fled after hitting the girl, who was quickly attended to by onlookers and race officials.

The child's identity was not disclosed.
