City launches food for fees program

SALEM, Mass. (AP) - December 2, 2010

Folks in Salem can get into the holiday spirit and get out of their overdue tickets.

Salem's amnesty program allows people to donate two cans of food, in exchange for waiving up to 20 bucks in late fees.

The "Peas for Fees" program runs until Christmas Eve.

But the donors aren't off the hook entirely.

They still must pay the original ticket.

An aide for Mayor Kim Driscoll tells The Salem News everyone wins.

The cans will be turned over to a local food bank.
