Ex-Philly officer convicted of sex assault

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - December 14, 2010

Jurors in Common Pleas Court on Monday convicted 51-year-old Tyrone Wiggins of four sexual assault charges but acquitted him of rape. He will be sentenced March 25.

Authorities said Wiggins began a sexual relationship with the girl when she was 12 years old after she began taking his karate class. Wiggins had alleged that she concocted the story after he told department officials that she had previously sold drugs.

The alleged victim is now 25 and a member of the Philadelphia police department. She broke into deep sobs after the verdict.

The Philadelphia Inquirer says Wiggins displayed no emotion when the verdict was read. He retired from the department in November 2009, a day before he was charged.
