He is the 33rd victim of a deadly fire in Philadelphia this year.
The blaze broke out at about 11:10 on Monday night, in a house on the 2000 block of South Frazier Street.
When firefighters arrived five minutes later, they opened the front door and found the house filled with smoke.
They rushed through the home, and pulled the owner to safety.
But when they went up to the second floor they found an unconscious man lying on the floor of the rear bedroom.
Efforts to revive him failed.
The fire was placed under control at 11:28.
Investigators say the survivor, the homeowner, had first tried to put the fire out on his own, but when that effort failed, he called 911.
Deputy Fire Commissioner Ernest Hargett told Action News that the first thing someone should do when a fire breaks out is get everyone out of the house, then call 911.
The one working smoking alarm in the house alerted the homeowner to the fire.
So far, officials have not released the name or age of the victim.
Investigators are searching for the cause.
