PowerBalance admits no proof bracelets work

PHILADELPHIA, PA.; January 4, 2011

Now the U-S company behind the PowerBalance "athletic strength bands" admits they don't do anything.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission forced the company to make a statement in the Australian media reading, "We admit that there is no credible scientific evidence that supports our claims."

The silicone bands, which sell for $29, contain a hologram, which the company says uses the body's "natural energy field" to improve strength, balance, and flexibility.

They have been worn by athletes in the NFL, NBA, and baseball major leagues. And some swear they have helped their performance.

However, skeptics have long doubted the claims, and said any "improvement" was likely a placebo effect.

In making its admission today, the company offered refunds to its Australian customers.
