Pa. church wins judgment in land ownership dispute

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - December 29, 2010

In an order signed on Wednesday, Common Pleas Judge Edward Griffith ruled that members of the Holy Ghost Orthodox Church in Phoenixville and its leaders are one and the same as the St. Nicholas Brotherhood.

The brotherhood is a legal entity set up decades ago to maintain ownership of the church's property along the Schuylkill River.

Griffith also ruled that the church membership had the authority to sell part of the land the brotherhood owns to a group that wants to build a senior housing facility there.

An attorney for the church says the ruling will give the church the opportunity to go ahead with that sale.
