Van used in cop shooting may be linked to 2nd shooting

PHILADELPHIA - January 1, 2011

Officer Adam O'Donnell's bullet proof vest saved him from serious injury, maybe even death, when the driver of a van refused to pull over after running a light near 57th and Spruce, and instead, fired at O'Donnell and his partner.

The officers returned fire, killing the gunman. Police haven't released the dead man's name.

But the green van he was driving is similar to one used in the December 15th holdup of an A-Plus mini mart on West Girard Avenue in Mantua.

A man was shot in the back during that holdup. He survived.

Surveillance was obtained of the gunman in that case. Police have not said if it is the same man who shot Officer O'Donnell Friday night.

Officer O'Donnell was treated and released from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
