Nickels really starting to add up

WASHINGTON (AP) - January 6, 2011

Whether shoppers in the nation's capital choose paper or plastic, they have to pay a 5-cent bag tax.

Washington officials say the fee has brought in about two million bucks since it went into effect last January.

While two mil may sound like a lot, it's not as much as officials had anticipated.

The bag tax was expected to bring in three and a-half mil the first year.

City officials say they're surprised by how many consumers are bringing reusable bags when they go shopping.
