Two charged with shooting clerk at Del. Wawa

PIKE CREEK, Del. - January 7, 2011

Brian Shields, 28, of Newark was arrested on Wednesday in the parking lot of the University Plaza Apartments located off of Chapman Road in Newark after investigators received a tip that he had participated in the crime. He was sent to jail for lack of $102,000 cash bail.

The other suspect, Andrew N. Bingham, 25, of New Castle, was arrested back in November by Pa. State Police in Media for allegedly participating in a home invasion. He remains in Pennsylvania and will be arrested by Delaware detectives upon extradition.

The shooting happened shortly before 5:00 a.m. on October 31st at the Wawa on New Linden Hill Road in Pike Creek.

Investigators say Shields and Bingham displayed handguns and demanded money from the 68-year-old clerk.

As the clerk was walking to the sales counter, police say he was shot in the thigh by one of the suspects.

The suspects then removed an undisclosed amount of money from the register as well as cigarettes and fled from the store.

As the suspects were fleeing, police say they opened fire on a car in which a 58-year-old Millsboro man was sitting, striking the vehicle but missing the driver.

The store clerk was treated by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was treated and released.

The second victim was not injured.
