Get a great haircut for just $10

Savvy fashionistas know how to find a great bargain even when it comes to good haircuts.

Haircuts at Jay Michael's Main Line salons start at $40 and can cost as much as $125, not including a blow dry.

But for years, savvy clients like Yvonne Miller of Malvern have been getting their hair cut and blown dry at Jay Michael's for just $10.

"I always tell people that if you like your hair played with, and if you like a great haircut, you can't beat it," said Yvonne Miller.

The $10 haircut deal is available at Jay Michael's Ardmore salon on Tuesday nights and his Radnor salon on Wednesday nights. And there is a bit of a catch.

The discount cuts are on-the-job training for the salon's junior stylists, under the supervision of more experienced staff members.

"The cuts are beautiful. The work is beautiful, because it is supervised, and it is a great bargain. It's good for us, and it's good for the consumer," said Jay Michael.

But Yvonne says she's never gotten a bad $10 cut.

"They've already been through whatever cosmetology school, and now they're just getting trained in Jay's techniques, so it's not like they're going to chop your hair off," said Miller.

There are a couple of other downsides. For one thing, they take longer than a regular haircut.

"Where an average haircut might take a half an hour, this hair cut might take up to an hour and a half," said Michael. "So the person has to realize that they need a little time."

There are a limited number of appointments available, and they usually book up a couple of weeks in advance.

Also, the student stylists don't stay students forever. Once they move onto the floor full-time, their prices do go up.

"That's how we grow our salon, and that's how our customers get great bargains," said Michael.
