Officer among 2 injured in Wilmington fire

WILMINGTON, Del. - Janaury 8, 2011

The fire started in the 400 block of North DuPont Street just after 8:30 pm.

Four responding officers were called to the rear of the building in response to neighbors yelling that there was a child trying to get out of a second floor window.

Two of the officers climbed onto a porch roof where they could see the victim's hand reaching out of the window. One of the officers, identified as Ptlm. Mark Ivey, while attempting to lift the victim out of the window, lost his footing and fell from the roof.

Ivey was transported to the Wilmington Hospital where he was treated for a minor left leg injury and smoke inhalation.

The child was ultimately rescued by firefighters and transported to the Christiana Hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
