Suspect ejected from car in police chase crash

PHILADELPHIA - January 9, 2011

The incident started shortly after 3:00 a.m. when a police officer attempted to stop a blue Mitsubishi that was driving recklessly on Route 1 near Route 252 in Upper Providence.

The vehicle pulled over for police and when the officer approached the car the driver started to pull away, dragging the officer for approximately 50 feet before the officer fell to the street.

The officer, who was not injured, ran back to his patrol car, jumped in and attempted to catch up to the fleeing vehicle while he radioed for assistance.

Numerous police agencies joined in the pursuit and attempted to catch up to the driver who was speeding north on Route 1 towards Philadelphia. Police report the driver lost control of his vehicle on Route 1 near 50th Street in Lower Merion, striking a traffic light standard, spinning around several times and then colliding with a bank of FedEx delivery boxes.

The impact of the crash ejected the driver from his vehicle. The unidentified driver was taken by Philadelphia Police to Lankenau Hospital where his condition is unknown.

The driver faces numerous charges including assault on an officer.
