Bordentown soldier dies in Afghanistan

BORDENTOWN, N.J. - January 13, 2011

Members of the Hope Hose Humane Fire Company in Bordentown are remembering one of their own.

23 year old Benjamin Moore was a Lieutenant in the volunteer fire company and an EMT and a soldier killed this week in Afghanistan.

"My heart hurts. I just saw him a couple of weeks ago, and I miss him already," said Chief Pete Sedor.

PFC Ben Moore joined the Army when he turned 21. He'd been in Afghanistan for nine months but came home for Christmas. It would be the last time his friends would see him.

Moore returned to the war zone on January 2nd. Two days ago, he was killed. The fire company said it was an I.E.D. One friend has already put together an internet tribute to him.

"He made the decision to defend freedoms that some people in the United States abuse, but he may think he fought so that people have their freedom," said Ken Mortello.

Moore, who was not married, is survived by his parents, a brother and his extended network of friends and family at the fire house where he served since he was 16. All who spoke of him did so with tears in their eyes.

"He had a good heart, happy go lucky, full of the devil. A lot of people are going to miss him," said Clarence Carter.

"He cared about the people, cared about the community, cared about his family. He was always there for you if you needed him; could never say no. He always made you laugh," said Sedor.

Ben Moore's friends and colleagues say he loved being a firefighter and EMT. And when he was home for the holidays, he went out on two calls.

When his Army career was over, he'd hope to become a police officer or career firefighter.
