Parenting Perspective: "Spit That Out!"

CENTER CITY - January 31, 2011

"It seemed that, during the time that I was pregnant, I was seeing more and more news stories and more information coming out that was something to be concerned about," Paige said.

Reports of BPA in baby bottles and teethers, lead in toys, questions about cloth versus disposable diapers and whether to feed her baby only organic foods were just some of the things she worried about.

At times, it seemed overwhelming.

"The hardest part about it is that there is constantly new information and it's never-ending and contradictory information coming out," she said.

Like all parents, Paige wanted to do what was best for her son.

The result was Paige's new book: "Spit That Out: The Overly Informed Parent's Guide to Raising Children in the Age of Environmental Guilt."

In it, she shares advice from experts, and tips for green moms - like where to find toys made from recycled materials, organic baby clothes and bio-degradable diapers.

But she also allows that Moms don't have to be perfectly green all the time. Even Sam does have some plastic and electronic toys - though most are second-hand.

"It's important to find ways to make it a little more simple without driving ourselves crazy," Paige said.
