Trucker in fatal I-76 crash faces federal charges

PHILADELPHIA - February 4, 2011

Federal prosecutors say 57-year-old Valerijs Belovs made 15 false entries in his driver's logbook before the January 2009 crash that killed 49-year-old David Schreffler.

Federal authorities say Belovs made false log notes saying he was resting when he was actually driving. Safe-driving rules bar truckers from driving more than 11 hours a day without resting for 10 hours.

Authorities say Belovs' rig had a falsified inspection sticker when its brakes failed. Belovs was convicted along with the truck's owner and mechanic on state charges in Montgomery County.

A phone listing for Belovs could not immediately be located.
