18 year old Keenan Williams says he was attacked Friday morning after first period inside the school.
His injuries were significant enough to keep him overnight in the hospital, and we spoke to him after his release from Saint Christopher's.
"As I went by, one of them swung on me, and the rest started attacking me," said Keenan Williams.
Keenan Williams has a concussion and needs surgery to repair his shattered eye socket following a fight at Gratz High School in Tioga.
"They are always in there jumping people. So when I saw them I stepped aside," said Keenan. "I didn't want to go through them, but they hit me."
After he describes being punched over and over, he says a security guard on the school's fourth floor pulled him free.
The school nurse accompanied him to St. Christopher's Hospital.
Philadelphia School District officials confirm the fight took place, and say that is was a neighborhood problem that spilled into the school.
Williams says he was a random target and doesn't know his attackers by name, but tells Action New not all of them were Gratz students, despite the security requirements to enter the building.
"You have to swipe in. But some doors are open like the lunchroom doors. People be sneaking their friends through the lunchroom doors," said Keenan.
"The last I heard the doors stayed locked. The side doors stayed locked," said Venice Gopaul. "I don't know, I don't know."
Williams' aunt Venice Gopaul fears retribution and plans to speak to school officials Monday about her nephew's future there.
She would like him to finish the year at Gratz, but worries for his safety if those responsible aren't held accountable.
While she says she's grateful for security measures already in place, she believes they need to be tighter.
"School is supposed to be a safe place, you know? I just want it to be a safe place," said Gopaul.
School officials are still looking for more information. The investigation continues.
