Sex tourism charges filed against philanthropist

PHILADELPHIA - February 7, 2011

Federal prosecutors say John Charles Ware, of Oxford, took two teenage boys out of the country and had sexual contact with them. The indictment alleges that trips to Italy and Iceland were scheduled for the boys' birthdays.

The 47-year-old Ware is a grandson of the late John H. Ware 3d, who served in Congress and the state Senate.

Prosecutors in Chester County charged Ware over the summer with sexually abusing three teens. He had been free on $1.3 million bail.

Ware works at a family philanthropic foundation. Defense attorney Christian Hoey on Monday declined comment on the charges but said his client had been denied pretrial release.
