Caucus Chairman Jea P. Street says something has to be done before the city's crime gets out of control.
Mayor James M. Baker has agreed to ask Gov. Jack Markell to form police task forces to concentrate on the three areas with the most gun violence - the Hilltop, Northeast and West Center City neighborhoods.
But Joe Lavelle, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Local Lodge 5, New Castle, says he finds it "flabbergasting" that the city laid off six police officers and now might ask for officers from other agencies.
