Man in custody in Cheltenham hit-and-run case

CHELTENHAM, Pa. - February 8, 2011

24-year-old George Humphrey is in custody for lying to police about the February 3rd crash in Cheltenham Township that killed 53-year-old Michelle Powell.

Humphrey was placed into custody over the weekend and is now jailed on $150,000 bail. Investigators say further charges are pending in this case.

Police say Powell was trying to cross Cheltenham Avenue near East Mt. Airy Avenue around 8:15 p.m. when she was struck.

Family members say Powell, a mother of two who lived with her husband in West Oak Lane, worked at the Walmart in the Cedarbrook Plaza where the accident happened.

They say she just left work and think she may have been crossing the street to get something to eat.
