Driver charged in Cheltenham hit-and-run

CHELTENHAM, Pa. - February 10, 2011

24-year-old George Humphrey of Philadelphia was previously in custody for lying to police about the February 3rd crash in Cheltenham Township that killed 53-year-old Michelle Powell.

Police say Powell was trying to cross Cheltenham Avenue near East Mt. Airy Avenue around 8:15 p.m. when she was struck.

The DA said, after the crash, Humphrey left the scene and allegedly cleaned blood off of the side of the car and the crack in the windshield.

After cleaning the car it was taken to Camden and abandoned on the street with the keys left in the ignition.

However, police soon located the car and found hair that is consistent with the victim on the passenger side rearview mirror of the car.

Family members say Powell, a mother of two who lived with her husband in West Oak Lane, worked at the Walmart in the Cedarbrook Plaza where the accident happened and may have been simply crossing the road to get something to eat when she was hit.
