Young musician to play at Carnegie Hall

February 17, 2011

The song is "Impromptu" by Hugo Reinhold. Helen is one of 15 finalists in the nation, chosen by the public in an on-line contest, offering young musicians an opportunity to perform in a Carnegie Hall Family Concert.

She says she never imagined she'd be chosen, but her classmates were not surprised.

"It's a really amazing instrument, and she plays it very beautifully," said classmate Tyler Petrochco.

Alicia Lu has been Helen's best friend since kindergarten.

"I've seen all the sacrifices she had to make, for her school work and everything. You have no idea how dedicated she is," explained Alicia Lu.

"Usually, I practice one to two hours, weekdays, and then I practice usually 3 to 4 hours on weekends," explained Helen Gerhold.

Helen was playing the piano at age three. Her aunt gave her first harp two years later.

"It's my sister. She is a harpist, and she saw that she is really good at music, and gave her a harp for her 5th birthday," said Yuan Gerhold, Helen's mother.

Helen has been playing with the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra since 2009, where she is the "principle" or lead harpist. She performed at the Kimmel Center last year.

While one of Helen's dreams will come true this spring, she also hopes to one day record a top-selling CD.

Helen Gerhold was the only finalist in the on-line competition from Pennsylvania. She will make her appearance at Carnegie Hall on April 9th.
