Body discovered submerged in Wilmington channel

WILMINGTON, Del.February 13, 2011

At approximately 10:38 a.m. Sunday, Wilmington police responded to the 300 block of S. Park Drive for the report of a body that was discovered in the Race (the name for the channel).

A passerby was walking his dog on the path adjacent to the Race when he spotted the body and notified authorities. Arriving officers described the victim as a partially clothed man submerged in the water directly beneath the Washington Street Bridge.

The Wilmington Fire Department responded to the scene and was able to recover the body without incident. Authorities say the victim appeared to be in the water for several days. At this time, there are no obvious signs of foul Play.

A preliminary identification of the victim revealed that he is a 30-year-old man from Newark.

The investigation is continuing.
