The Montvale, N.J.-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., which operates stores under the A&P, Pathmark, Food Emporium, Food Basics and Waldbaum's banners, filed for bankruptcy protection last fall and closed 32 stores.
It announced the plans for more store closures in a news release on Tuesday. It said it requested court permission for the closings, but did not identify the store locations in the news release. A call to the company was not immediately returned.
A&P is one of the oldest supermarket operators in the country. Its first store was in New York City and sold tea, coffee and spices. It expanded across the nation and by the 1930s was the largest grocer in the country.
After the latest closings, it will be down to about 340 stores.
