Rabid raccoon found in Egg Harbor Twp.

EGG HARBOR TWP., N.J. - February 24, 2011

The raccoon was found on the property during the daylight hours of February 18th appearing unsteady and sick.

Animal control officers responded and removed the animal.

It was sent to the state lab for testing and a positive test for rabies was returned on Wednesday.

No people were exposed.

This is the third confirmed case of rabies within the county this year. Atlantic County reported seven rabies cases in 2010.

Health officials remind residents about the importance of vaccinating their pets. The Atlantic County Animal Shelter offers a free rabies vaccination clinic to residents each month at 240 Old Turnpike Road, Pleasantville. The next clinic will be held on Sunday, March 27 from 10 AM to 12 noon.
