Dozens of calls to 911 switchboards began around 7:00 a.m.
The smell seems to have moved from southwest to northeast stretching from lower Delaware County up through South Philadelphia to Center City and beyond.
Sunoco, which operates two large refineries in the area, says a check of their facilities shows no leaks or releases.
The foul odor seems to have dissipated, but the search for the source continues.
