According to police, Ralph Carstarphen, 24, of Camden, was shot multiple times shortly before midnight at the intersection of 6th and Royden streets. Carstarphen was outside on the street when a van pulled up and three armed men exited the vehicle and shot him. The shooters then got back in the van, which sped from the scene.
Two others, an 18-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, were also hit by gunfire. The male is in critical but stable condition at Cooper University Hospital in Camden and the female was treated and released. Their identities are not being released at this time.
A Camden police cruiser on patrol in the area at the time of the shooting responded immediately and identified the suspects' van. They pursued the vehicle to 9th and Line streets where the men in the van got out to flee on foot. Officers pursued and fired at the perpetrators. No injuries resulted.
Three suspects fled from police but officers were able to take one man into custody in connection with the shooting.
Investigators continue to search for the other men involved in the shooting.
Officers also confiscated two handguns and will determine whether these weapons were used in the killing.
