Emergency responders rally in Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. - February 28, 2011

A rally was held outside city hall on Monday morning.

The protesters are demanding that the mayor restores public safety.

Last month, the city laid off nearly 400 city employees, about one-fourth of all its workers. The cuts were deepest in the police department, which lost nearly half its officers, and the fire department, which lost one-third of its firefighters.

Fire and police unions claim crime has increased dramatically since the layoffs became effective more than a month ago.

City officials have not responded to those claims.
