Discounts for teachers

April 18, 2011

The good news for teachers is that because of what they do at work, they're entitled to exclusive discounts when they have time to shop, dine out or enjoy some entertainment.

"Everybody knows that students receive discounts from restaurants, to movies, to shopping," explains Consumer Savings Expert Andrea Woroch. "And teachers also can find lots of discounts."

Woroch says teachers can get discounts for things you'd expect, like books, office supplies and arts and crafts items.

For example, JoAnn Fabrics offers a Teacher Rewards Discount card that gives teachers 15% off their purchases -- and 20% off the first time they use it. A.C. Moore and Michael's have similar programs.

Barnes and Noble offers teachers 20% off hardbacks and 15% off paperbacks. And Borders Classroom Discount Card gives teachers and librarians 25% off most in-store purchases.

"At the Container store, they also have an "organized teacher discount" so you go online and you sign up for that and you get a card so that when you go the store, you get 15% off," Woroch explains.

And while those discounts can definitely help in the classroom, teachers can also save on non-school-related items, like clothing and restaurants.

For example, Ann Taylor Loft offers 15% through its "Loft Loves Teachers" program. The Limited, J Crew and New York and Company also give teachers 15% off.
