Toms River clerk J. Mark Mutter told the Asbury Park Press Leonard "Bud" Lomell died of natural causes Tuesday.
On June 6, 1944, Lomell and fellow members of the Army's 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled a 100-foot cliff above the beaches of Normandy, France, to attack German artillery that could fire on D-day landing zones.
Lomell and Sgt. Jack Kuhn destroyed the guns with grenades and by smashing their sites.
Lomell earned the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second-highest military honor, for his actions.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
