The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office tells the Asbury Park Press and The Press of Atlantic City several police officers arrived at a home on Maple Street in the Waretown section of Ocean Township Thursday evening.
Deputy Chief Michael Mohel says the resident, whose name has not been released, was shot by one of the officers. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The name of the police officer has not been released and Mohel doesn't have any information about what led to the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing.
