West Phila. concert raises money for fire victims

WEST PHILADELPHIA - March 5, 2011

It was a fund raiser for more than 100-residents of the Windermere Court Apartments who lost virtually everything in big fire in January.

The powerful sound of gospel music in West Philadelphia, voices devoted to help people in need.

The Monumental Baptist Church hosted the performance to raise funds for victims of a huge fire that devastated the lives of 150 people.

89 units of the Windermere Apartment complex were destroyed back in January, leaving the tenants out in the cold.

They were unable to salvage much; many did not have insurance and remain homeless.

Wilfred Bailey was one of the Windermere's employees. He's lucky enough to have a place to live, courtesy of friends, but he remains jobless as he struggles to get back on his feet.

"I'm not working right now. I went to unemployment. That's the only thing I am getting right now," said Wilfred "Pop" Bailey.

The politicians came out to support this community effort, and to try and do what they can to try to make these fire victims whole again.

"Most people are either in a shelter right now, or most people are staying with family or being referred to places. They are still not all straight, but we're working with it," explained Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell.

"A clothing drive, fundraisers and all the money will go directly to the Windermere residents," said Horace Patterson.

As the two hour gospel service came to a close, the neighborhood association announced that they had raised close to $5,000 in aid money so far, with $1,000 of it coming in a check from Mayor Nutter.
