Violence prompts police presence at Newark H.S.

NEWARK, Del. - March 14, 2011

The first incident happened Monday, March 7 around 6:45 p.m. when police say a student from Shue-Medill assaulted a classmate while attending a Middle School Basketball Championship at Newark High School.

The 14-year-old suspect allegedly assaulted the 13-year-old victim in the parking lot of the school. The older student was arrested and later released into his parents' custody.

Then around 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, a 15-year-old Newark High School student was sitting in the cafeteria when she was approached by another 15-year-old female student and assaulted. The victim sustained several contusions to the head. The suspect was arrested and released to the custody of her mother.

The third incident at the high school happened at approximately 12:08 p.m. Wednesday. Police say a 15-year-old student was walking in a hallway when he was approached by seven other students who proceeded to punch and kick him.

The student was transported to Christiana Hospital by his mother where he was treated for a broken nose, mild concussion and multiple contusions. School and police officials were able to identify and detain the suspects involved in the assault. Six of the seven were juveniles.

At approximately 11:53 a.m. on Thursday, a fourth incident was reported. In this case school security was called to the cafeteria where they discovered a 17-year-old student, cursing, throwing items and threatening anyone who came near him. The student then attempted to walk out the school, ignoring the security officer's commands to stop. Outside the front entrance, the security officer grabbed the student in an attempt to take him into custody. The student then turned toward the officer and, according to police, faced the officer in "an aggressive posture".

The officer unsuccessfully deployed his taser on the student. The officer then advised the student that he would be tased again if he did not comply with the officer, to which he surrendered and was taken into custody.

The student was arrested for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct and released to the custody of his parent.

The last incident happened shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Friday. School security was notified that a 17-year-old student may be armed with a knife. The student was located in a bathroom and escorted to the principal's office where it was discovered that he had a filet knife in a sheath attached to his belt. He was arrested for carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

Police say the majority of these incidents were unrelated. The extra police presence at the school Monday morning was a precautionary measure while busses unloaded.
