Cheaper gas may be just a county away

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - March 15, 2011

"I don't go out very often. I just go to work and back," said Anneliese Cygan of Allentown.

"No more cruising around anymore, not as much. No fun times," said Dan LaBert of Coopersburg.

But here's a story that the Lehigh Valley will have a little fun hearing about. It turns out that even though we all live in Pennsylvania, gasoline prices here in the Lehigh Valley average 3 to 5 cents a gallon less than in Philadelphia. Sometimes the difference is as much as 20 cents a gallon.

"The Philadelphia area has reformulated gasoline, which is a little cleaner-burning, because of the clean air standards that were set forth a number of years ago," said Theresa Podguski of /*AAA*/ East Central.

That reformulated blend is a bit more expensive. Carlos Carrasquillo, who lives in Allentown but works just outside Philadelphia, says he has noticed the difference too.

"I fill up my gas tank twice a week. I wait till I come home to put gas in it. I definitely do that," he said.

So the question is, is it worth it to drive all the way up here to sayve a few cents on gas? The people at AAA say no. They say you're better off shopping around for prices in your own neighborhood.

"It's best to actually shop in your own market. You can go online now, there are a number of websites now, including AAA's Fuel Finder, where you can find the fuel prices," said Podguski.

Experts say getting into the habit of shopping for gas prices now is likely a good idea with continued unrest in the Middle East and the summer driving season right around the corner.

"We don't feel that it will be across the board $4 a gallon at this point in time. But it is very hard to predict," said Podguski.
