Man charged in attempted rape of Del. woman

WILMINGTON, Del. - March 16, 2011

Damar Smith was arrested at approximately 10:00 Tuesday night in the 1400 Block of North Harrison Street. He was charged with one count of Attempted Rape 1st Degree, Burglary 1st Degree and Unlawful Imprisonment 2nd Degree.

Investigators say that on Monday, March 14, at approximately 3:00 a.m. Wilmington Police responded to a residence in the 2100 block of N. Washington Street in regards to an assault. Upon their arrival, officers met with a 21-year-old woman who told them that she had been attacked by an unknown man in her residence.

The victim said she had heard her doorbell and when she went to answer the door she was confronted by a man with a red bandana covering his face and his genitals exposed.

The woman said she then ran from the door and the man followed her into the residence. She then ran into a first floor living room where the suspect grabbed her and attempted to sexually assault her.

The victim's boyfriend, who was upstairs asleep at the time, heard her screams and started down the steps at which point the suspect fled.

The victim was luckily uninjured in the incident.

18-year-old Damar Smith was later linked to the incident as the alleged suspect. He has been committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in lieu of bail, which was set at $112,000.
