Police: Montco boy, 8, stabs great-grandmother

CHELTENHAM, Pa. - March 21, 2011

Investigators say the 54-year-old woman was stabbed three times in the back around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at a home on the 7400 block of Fourth Avenue in the Elkins Park section of Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.

Cheltenham police say the woman was treated at a nearby hospital and released. She needed two staples to close one of the wounds.

The other wounds were described by police as 'superficial.'

Authorities say the attack was unprovoked and the boy may suffer from a mental illness. He was referred to a facility for a mental health evaluation.

Police said the boy lives at the home with both his mother and great-grandmother.

The investigation is ongoing.
