NJ beach town overturns sand castle restrictions

BELMAR, N.J. - March 22, 2011

Belmar has overturned an ordinance that required people to get written permission from the town council if they planned to construct something out of the sand.

The ordinance was on the books even though the Monmouth County town hosted a sand castle competition for 24 years.

The new ordinance just requires builders to level the sand before leaving the area.

Belmar Mayor Matthew Doherty told the Asbury Park Press the council is looking to change outdated ordinances.
