Court seeks answers about NJ nuke plant

LACEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. - March 23, 2011

The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals has asked the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to explain whether damage to Japan's nuclear reactors have any impact on the 2009 relicensing of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Lacey Township.

Oyster Creek shares the same design as the troubled Japanese reactors.

The court is hearing arguments over whether Oyster Creek's license should have been extended.

The NRC approved a 20-year license renewal in 2009. The plant's owner soon announced it would shut the plant down in 10 years.

NRC spokeswoman Diane Screnci told The Star-Ledger of Newark it's not uncommon for courts to ask additional questions based on current events.
