Man shot by police in Mount Holly identified

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. - March 29, 2011

The man, 20-year-old Bilal Williams of the 200 block of Rutland Avenue, remains in critical but stable condition at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.

The shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. Sunday in the rear yard of 119 Rancocas Road.

Police were called there for a domestic disturbance and the female officer who arrived allegedly found Williams armed with two knives.

The officer, who is not yet being identified by investigators, told Williams to drop the knives. Police say Williams refused then lunged at the officer.

The officer fired, striking Williams in the lower torso.

Police say, because the shooting happened in the rear yard, there were several witnesses who saw Williams lunge at the officer.

Williams has not yet been charged with a crime, but police expect that to change once he is released from the hospital.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the investigation to determine whether the officer's use of force was appropriate.
