Final Flight ceremony at Willow Grove base

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. - March 30, 2011

The Navy is scheduled to leave this September. So today, they held a Base Disestablishment Ceremony.

Today's event highlighted the long history of the base. It was originally built in 1943.

211 people and three C-130T Hercules transports from Wilow Grove are being transferred to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey.

Fixed Wing Logistics Squadron 64's move from the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base at Willow Grove, Pa., is part of the consolidation ordered by the 2005 federal base realignment.

The squadron deploys overseas to fly missions out of Navy bases in Bahrain, Japan and Italy. Members also fly missions within the United States.

With the Navy now departing, the tower and airfield will be closed.

The Army will remain in a corner of the base from now on. They will have two units, a National Guard unit and an Army Reserve.

The Air Force will have administrative offices at the base.

There will be, however, be no more military flying.
