Arrest made in rape at Philadelphia coffee shop

CHESTER, Pa. - April 4, 2011

Chester Police captured wanted rape suspect, Christopher Reeves, at 8th and Madison around 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

Philadelphia investigators tell Action News Reeves provided a false name when initially confronted by Chester officers, but soon confessed his real name after being questioned further at police headquarters.

Residents expressed relief throughout the Bella Vista neighborhood where the brutal assault took place Thursday morning.

"Fabulous. I cannot be more thankful," said Amy Meade.

The victim had just opened up at the Bean Exchange when Reeves allegedly walked in saying he needed money to get back to his homeless shelter. She gave him a buck and he left.

He returned a short time later, robbed the place and allegedly took her in a bathroom and raped her.

Matt Armstrong owns the coffee shop.

"It's a little bit of light in a very, very dark time for ourselves and our employee which is most important and for our neighborhood," said Matt Armstrong.

The coffee shop remained closed on Sunday. Armstrong says it will reopen on Monday.

Employees are trying to cope the best they can, and while there is some relief, there's also a sense of anger about what happened, and the fact Reeves was on the streets despite a lengthy rap sheet of violent crimes.

"The question I have in my mind is why was he out?" asks Armstrong. "Why was he walking the streets with the history that was there."

"We are in this little pocket of the city that everyone feels safe around here and he's kind of ruined that," said Amy Meade.

There is a $7,500 reward offered for the successful capture of Reeves, but it is unclear just who will receive it.
