Police: Man who took girl on K-mart robbery arrested

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA - April 4, 2011

Police say Angel Ortiz swiped up to $2,000 dollars in jewelry with his daughter nearby.

He then allegedly fled from the store in this car. Investigators say the car was later found in South Philadelphia, where Ortiz was arrested.

They say his daughter told police that 'daddy stole the jewelry.'

Police say the child's mom did not know of the crime.

Investigators went on to say that surveillance video from the store, that aired exclusively on Action News Friday night, led to the tip that caught him.

Police say it is Ortiz who is seen on that video at the K-Mart store in the 7100 block of Roosevelt Boulevard. He walks up to the jewelry counter at about 10:00 a.m. Friday with the little girl, who appears to be about 4 years old. He then uses a screwdriver to pry open a countertop jewelry kiosk.

Police say he emptied the kiosk of jewelry and then leaves the store hand-in-hand with the little girl. Police say he had apparently cased the place before the heist.
