Holy Family athlete charged with theft at Citizens Bank Park

PHILADELPHIA - April 7, 2011

19-year-old Matthew Kravchuk was arrested at Wednesday night's Phillies game against the Mets. He is charged with retail theft, accused of stealing two unspecified beverages from a concession stand totaling $15.

You may recall that during a routine practice back on January 25th, Holy Family basketball coach John O'Connor interrupted a drill and knocked Kravchuk to the ground. Video of the incident leaked to the media, gaining national attention and culminating with an on-air showdown between the two men on Good Morning America.

During the on-air confrontation, the coach tried to apologize to Kravchuk, saying, "Matt, this was an accident, I was just trying to make us a better team and make us more competitive, and in doing so, an accident happened."

"To be honest, it's kind of hard to accept your apology just because you claimed it's justifiable, and you claimed you weren't crossing the line," said Matt Kravchuk. "And also, I can no longer play basketball right now. I'm injured. I can't play, and I can't play for you anymore just because as your player, I'm supposed to be able to respect you, I don't feel I could do that anymore."

O'Connor, who had been with the team less than a year, later told his players that he was stepping down as head coach - ending an unhappy chapter for the coach, his team and for Holy Family University in Northeast Philadelphia.

Upon hearing of the coach's resignation, Kravchuk's lawyer issued a statement.

"It's a sad conclusion for everybody, but as far as we're concerned, it has now come to an end."

The day after the two faced off on Good Morning America, the Philadelphia District Attorney announced there would be no criminal charges filed in the case.
