16 homes burn in Maple Shade apartment blaze

MAPLE SHADE, N.J. - April 10, 2011

The blaze broke out around 4:30 Sunday morning at the Fox Meadow Apartments on Clover Path Drive in Maple Shade.

The first firefighters on the scene reported heavy flames shooting from several apartments.

The flames were so hot and fast moving that the fire was quickly escalated to 3-alarms.

Two people are being treated at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. One of the victims jumped from a second floor apartment to escape the flames. His roommate tells Action News that he remains hospitalized but is OK and amazingly didn't break any bones.

Sources at the scene tell Action News firefighters had water supply problems, because a water tower nearby on Route 73 is down for repairs.

Investigators tell us the smoke detectors went off when the fire erupted.

The fire affected 16 units - some of which were destroyed. The devastating result of the blaze has made it very tough for fire officials to determine where the fire started and what sparked the blaze.
