Parenting: Is dirt actually good for kids?

April 11, 2011

So many questions posed here in our parenting blog. Here is what we as adults know about dirt:

  • Kids love dirt. They have an innate desire to find it, to find ways to attach it to their skin, their clothing, furniture and bed sheets.
  • Kids have an innate ability to locate dirt for these very applications (for example: a mom and her son are walking to the grocery store...there is a puddle filled with mud along the way...who are you putting your money on to find that puddle and make a big splash?)
  • Parents have difficulty convincing their children that dirt is not good; or, at least, the notion that it is not good to have on you all of the time.
  • Dirt comes in many forms, shapes, sizes, smells, and almost always chooses to attach itself on white items first.
  • Agreed? Now, here is what children think they know about dirt:

  • It is the nectar of the universe and makes me strong.
  • All the other kids like it. How bad can it be?
  • My parents say it is bad. Hmmm. Must mean it is good.
  • Doesn't really taste all that bad.
  • It is everywhere. How can I avoid it?
  • In all seriousness, I've often wondered if this continuous push to wash your hands continuously, use anti-bacterial soaps, and keep one's body pristine and immaculate is all it's cracked up to be.

There is an excellent article on webmd.com that talks about the "hygiene hypothesis."

Basically, some researchers have found that exposing infants to more germs earlier in life can strengthen their immune systems for later in life.

However, at the same time, doctors will tell you the best way to prevent spreading dangerous diseases like influenza is frequent hand washing. And take the building that I work in on City Avenue. 6abc has hand sanitizers throughout the building, hoping people's hands will be clean(er) when operating electronic equipment and computer keyboards that many other people have to share.

Are your children clean 24-7? Probably not. Do they come into contact with other children that are plenty dirty and covered in germs? Probably. Will you ever avoid dirt? No.

Do you need to find balance in your own cleanliness at home with your children? Most definitely.

There is plenty of advice flowing around about how to be the best parent. Just remember one thing: when it comes to parenting at your house, you're the boss!
