Heightened alert after Fairmount Park attack

FAIRMOUNT PARK - April 12, 2011

They were alerting joggers about Monday's attack and urging them to keep an eye out for the suspect.

"I was shocked because you do have a false sense of security," said JoAnne Burns of Roxborough. "We do try to run in pairs, but you still see it this morning: young ladies running with headphones on."

"It's very unfortunate," said Bill McClellan of West Oak Lane. "Things like this can happen."

The attack happened around 8:30 Monday morning. The 17-year-old victim saw the man prior to her 20-minute jog and told police she didn't think much of him. But as she wrapped up her work out on a remote path near Valley Green he sprang from the woods and tried to rip off her clothes.

She was able to fight him off and was uninjured.

"It only takes a split second for someone to come by and snatch you off and pull you into one of these isolated trails," said Burns.

Police only have a vague description. He is believed to be an Hispanic male, 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and broad shoulders. He was wearing a dark hoodie and dark pants. Police were not able to draw a composite sketch because neither the victim nor witnesses who saw him run off got a good look at his face.

"It's sad for everybody but I totally believe in the woods and the safety of what the park offers," said Marnie Cullen of Chestnut Hill.

Police want people to be on alert and aware of their surroundings.

"I really think you can't walk with earphones. I think that's a really important piece of it. I try to walk with a friend but I also feel really safe here," said Burns.
